STDS

Not long ago, I was asked to present an STD lecture to a singles group, ages 45 and older. Anytime I had been asked to speak about this before, it was for adolescents. I was not sure what this group would want to discuss. It quickly became apparent that the singles group needed the same information as our young people. So here are my tips for everyone on keeping sex “safer.”

These suggestions are fairly simple to follow:

* Talk to your partner
* Get STD screening
* Immunize
* Condoms are a must
* Don’t mix sex and alcohol or drugs
* Be safe in public settings

In 1975 Sam Yehaskel decided that he wanted to start a business that would reflect his creative side. He chose to start selling window treatments. At the time, vertical blinds were brand new and you could get them in at least half a dozen colors! A few years later the Yehaskels moved to Great Neck, NY where they remain today. As the business grew Sam began to fabricate draperies as well, which soon became the cornerstone of the business. Over time the window coverings industry has gone through many changes with offerings of hundreds of additional products in thousands of colors, styles and fabrics.

I was born in Minsk, Belarus and moved to the U.S. at the age of 19. Prior to my emigration, I was studying Global Economy and International Relations, an academic background which has informed my professional work in numerous fields. Throughout my life, from Minsk to Chicago, enriching my every experience has been my sustained passion for acting. For the past two years I have been enrolled in classes at Act One Studios, an experience which has presently propelled my theater studies to the stage of Loyola University’s Theater School.

Despite shortfalls in state funding to community colleges, Illinois Valley Community College still approved a balanced budget for its operating costs for the 2008-2009 school year.
The IVCC Board of Trustees voted 5-0 Wednesday to approve the budget as presented last month. Trustees Deborah Sweeden and Thomas Setchell were absent.

The $33 million budget includes a loss of $167,000 in revenue due to the elimination of several grants in the state budgeting process. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said the budget had included the option of adding four new staff positions. Given the loss of funding, the option of moving ahead with all four positions will be placed on hold. The college also will review contracts for services, supplies and conference and meeting expenses as places to make further cuts.

First Chicago Health Service

TOPIC: Access and utilization of mental health services for Latino children. PURPOSE: As Latino children may experience higher rates of unmet needs, this article examines the current literature for the reasons for the disparity and the barriers to the utilization of mental health services for Latino children.

SOURCES: An integrative literature review was undertaken from child psychiatry and nursing.

CONCLUSIONS: The literature confirmed a pattern of underutilization of mental health services by Latino children, but did not completely address the reasons for the disparity. Suggested barriers were language and cultural issues. Gaps in the literature include a lack of agreement for definition of a mental health problem and the tools to identify these, insufficient studies into the barriers for Latino children in the access and utilization of mental health services, and cultural and language issues related to Latino research.
